On her release day, Monica briefly chopped it up with Audacy’s Greg Street to discuss her new single, accompanying music video, and forthcoming album. “Doing it independently is very different,” said Monica, referring to her latest video shoot. “It requires so much more. But I'm really excited about everybody seeing it.”

During the interview, Monica recalls the “Friends” video being filmed in the desert. Shockingly, although it was extremely cold outdoors, the shoot was still a success “It looks incredible,” the legendary singer expressed. “I was really proud with how it came out.”

Produced by Tasha Catour, “Friends” is about "keeping people in their place and handling your own relationships," according to Monica. The heartfelt track is the follow up to “Trenches” featuring Lil Baby.  Both singles are expected to appear on her ninth studio album Trenches slated to arrive this fall.

Trenches will be Monica’s first independent release from her label MonDeenise Music. “The Boy Is Mine” singer was inspired to take the independent route last year after her record deal came to an end. “We have to wear 20 hats a piece to make what happens at a  corporation happen,” Monica expressed.“It is definitely a marathon and not a sprint,” she added.
