Few fast food chains have captured diner loyalty quite like Popeyes.
Since its founding in 1972 in New Orleans, the friendly Southern chain has given the colonel quite a run for his fried chicken money, but a host of other menu items have inspired fans too.
While the menu includes a number of items anyone would happily eat instead of going to the doctor's office or doing taxes, you need only concern yourself with the best of the best. Here are the top Popeyes menu items, ranked.
7.Fried Gizzards
Before you go searching your local Popeyes menu for these beauties, know they're only available in select locations (read: Louisiana), which is the only reason they're so low on this list. The deep fried neck organs may sound off-putting, but they're a down-home classic dish and Popeyes does 'em right. Like concentrated dark meat with a satisfying chew, fried gizzards are a crowd pleaser among a crowd not always disposed to like them. They're a dark meat-flavored, dark horse winner.
6.Mashed Potatoes and Gravy
Forget about the first half of the item name and focus all of your cosmic energy on the gravy. Infused with chicken-y goodness, the gravy rises above other fast food sauces, making it an excellent complement to pretty much anything else on the menu -- or honestly any food.
5.Tenders
Like the famed Popeyes fried chicken in dippable form. While the tenders don't quite have the structural satisfaction of the bone-in bird, the dipping sauces make up for any minimal loss of texture. Just be sure to get 'em spicy.
4.Chicken Sandwich
Popeyes destroyed the chicken sando game in 2019, launching a viral sensation and equally furious backlash when sandwich stocks ran out at most Popeyes locations. Even after the media and the hype died down, though, the sandwich is still bonkers good, providing Popeyes signature chicken on the go.
3.Red Beans and Rice
The red beans and rice may not have that greasy fast food appeal, but the flavor will still carve a little home in the middle of your soul, forcing you to go back again and again to satisfy a fundamental urge for their smoky flavor. Just accept it.
2.Biscuits
The description of Popeyes own website, "hearty and flaky buttermilk biscuits" hardly does justice to the chain's own supreme bakery item. They're not a side, but a main attraction of the eating experience, rising above mere carbs or protein accompaniment to achieve pillowy nirvana. They're salty and buttery and perfect. There's a reason every home baker has posted a copycat recipe online.
1.Spicy Chicken
Put Popeyes chicken up against any other fried bird from a competing fast food chain (heck, put it up against fried chicken from any sit-down restaurant too), and you'll see why it's Popeyes signature. NOLA eaters claim it tastes even better in the Big Easy, so head down to Louisiana if you want to taste Popeyes at its greatest.
