Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has been continually giving advice and educating the public on the COVID-19 pandemic.

Even though vaccinations are continually being dispersed, Fauci is warning that if the country declares victory over the pandemic now, we may still see another COVID-19 surge, reported The Hill.

During an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Fauci noted that COVID cases have plateaued between 45,000 and 60,000 per day and how those numbers are “still at a level that are really quite risky."

Fauci explained how the decrease from the winter’s “extraordinarily high” case numbers per day is “really good news," but still doesn't put us in the clear.

“That’s much better than the few hundred thousand per day, but it’s still at an unacceptably high level,” Fauci said.

“We’ve really got to be careful that we don’t claim victory and pull back on all the public health measures that we know work in keeping the lid on these surging of infections,” he added.

Fauci urged everyone to continue to social distance and wear face masks even if they are vaccinated.

“Keeping that up, we are going in the right direction,” he said. “But if all of a sudden we declare victory, we can risk a surge.”

To further prove his point, Fauci explained how Europe recently pulled back on COVID restrictions and has since seen a surge of cases. “We want to make sure that does not happen here in the United States,” he said.
