Moderna’s CEO is speaking out about the potential immunity offered by the COVID-19 vaccine.
Stephane Bancel suggested that the recently approved vaccine may provide a few years of defense.
"The nightmare scenario that was described in the media in the spring with a vaccine only working a month or two is, I think, out of the window," Bancel said during an Oddo BHF event, per Reuters.
However, more data is necessary to make a definitive claim.
"The antibody decay generated by the vaccine in humans goes down very slowly," he said, adding, “We believe there will be protection potentially for a couple of years."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use in early December.
The vaccine received approval from the European Commission on Wednesday.
The length of immunity has been a lingering question for the vaccine that was developed in under a year. Though it's too soon to tell, research remains ongoing.
According to the outlet, Bancel said the company was also attempting to prove that the vaccine would also be effective against variants of the novel virus seen in Britain and South Africa.
In addition to Moderna, the Pfizer vaccine is being rolled out across the United States in hopes that life will soon return to a pre-pandemic normalcy.
Currently, Moderna is recommended for people 18 years of age and older, while Pfizer is available for those 16 and older.
