(WWJ) A nurse has been arrested in Detroit for allegedly trying to steal a couple of doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

A spokesperson for the Detroit Mayor's Office told WWJ Newsradio 950 that the crime took place at the TCF Center in downtown Detroit, where city residents have been getting their COVID shots for several weeks.

Another worker spotted the woman allegedly trying to make off with two individual syringes.

The worker reported the theft to Detroit police officers, who were on the scene, and the suspect was taken into custody.

The two doses are now being held for evidence, but officials say that everyone who arrived at TCF for a scheduled appointment did receive their shot.

Officials say the vaccine is kept secure under tight security until it is delivered in the syringes onto the TCF floor, where there are several police officers, security guards and cameras, and that each dose is also accounted for at the end of each day.

"We know that each dose is precious," added and we are proud of the staff member who would not allow this to happen and spoke up to prevent this nurse from leaving the worksite before she could be arrested."

The name of the woman in custody is being withheld, as she awaits an arraignment on expected charges.
