The foundation was started in 2012 to honor her grandparents, Clara and Lionel Braithwaite.

“We support and fund groundbreaking, effective climate resilience and justice programs around the world,” the non profit organization's mission statement reads.

According to Variety, the money will be split amongst 18 climate justice and grassroots organizations across seven Caribbean nations and the United States.

Per the Associated Press, these include Climate Justice Alliance, the Indigenous Environmental Network, and the Movement for Black Lives.

Rihanna, who was named a billionaire by Forbes, made the donations in partnership with Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey’s #StartSmall fund.

Per the outlet, “there is a focus on groups with female, LGBTQ and Black and indigenous leaders because their communities are at the greatest risk.”

“At the Clara Lionel Foundation, much of the work is rooted in the understanding that climate disasters, which are growing in frequency and intensity, do not impact all communities equally, with communities of color and island nations facing the brunt of climate change,” the singer, real name Robyn Rihanna Fenty, said in a press release. “This is why CLF prioritizes both climate resilience and climate justice work across the U.S. and Caribbean.”

“Funders must build partnerships with grassroots organizations, acknowledging their deep understanding of what is necessary to achieve climate justice in their own communities,” said Justine Lucas, Clara Lionel Foundation’s executive director.

Back in 2020, at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, Rihanna teamed up with Dorsey to donate $15 million to mental health services, along with an added $2 million to support domestic violence victims in Los Angeles.
