The annual NCAA College Basketball tournament is just about two-and-a-half weeks away and depending on where you’re reading this, it’s accessible! Those living in Portland Oregon will get the chance to see rounds 1 & 2, session 3, of the tournament at the Moda Center starting March 19th. The tournament makes it’s return after about a seven year absence. But considering the current crowds showing up for Trail Blazer games, and recent television ratings, this could be a non starter for Portlanders.

According to MSNBC’s research, the 2021 NCAA men’s basketball championship game attracted an average of 16.9 million viewers to CBS Sports on Monday, a 14% decline from the 2019 game. The 2020 contest was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. That’s not necessarily good.

College basketball has been experiencing a steady decline in viewership over the past decade. It’s hard to pinpoint what’s sapping the sport of enthusiasm and excitement. Many people blame the “one-and-done” rule that allows players to leave after one season. This rule has created a void of star players and culturally empty teams.

Others blame the lack of offensive production compared to the NBA. It’s true that college basketball is a different kind of watch. You have to REALLY love defense to watch a Big 10 game. Perhaps fans have just become more accustomed to watching fast paced action.

Either way, Portland sports fans should attend tournament play at the Moda Center on March 19th. March Madness is the encapsulation of unexpected moments and shattered dreams. A perfect amalgam of college athletics and entertainment. Plus, who wants to watch the Trail Blazers tank anyway?
