Amid his countless busy days preparing to be the next head coach of the Oregon Ducks, Dan Lanning was kind enough to join Dusty for a phone conversation, Tuesday. Lanning is currently juggling two responsibilities; getting acclimated to the University of Oregon and being the defensive coordinator for the Georgia Bulldogs during the college football playoff. “We’re using every minute we have,” Lanning said.

“You know, the one thing that’s bother me is that some people go to sleep at night, and it’s hard to get work done when they’re asleep.”

Lanning already scored a big win this past week, convincing Ducks running back/wide receiver, Seven McGee to stay with the program. “You can’t build a relationship in five minutes,” the head coach explained. “Seven is giving us an opportunity to show him what we’re about and I’m thrilled he’s going to be here, and be a big piece to what we do going forward.

“I think they’re energized and really excited… They know our vision for Ducks football and I think they share in that vision, share in that hope,” he said. “I just appreciate their response and maturity in welcoming me.”

Coach also spoke about the need to connect with players on a deeper level, and continue to build those relationships well after football. “If I’m not getting in those conversations with these guys, ten to 15 years from now about their families, about their lives, then I’ve been a failure as a coach.”

“That’s all I really want to be, is a beacon for these guys moving forward.”
