The Seahawks are pushing reset

What releasing Bobby Wagner signals about Seattle's future plans

This week has made clear how the Seahawks are intending to shape their future. It won’t be built on the backs of reliable standbys Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner. Wilson was dealt to the Denver Broncos earlier this week for a bevy of picks, some decent players and George Fant. Then, Wednesday brought news the team would release defensive captain and pro-bowl linebacker, Bobby Wagner. These two seismic moves draw a clear conclusion for the Pacific Northwest team.

It’s time for a complete reset in Seattle. Tear down the structure and draw up new blueprints. That could mean more player movement.

Consider what assets Seattle could garner from a DK Metcalf trade. Given, the wide receiver has just one year left on this deal, but there would have to be a desperate contender who viewed his value at a one year rental for a title run that would exchange more draft picks. Tyler Lockett has four-years left with a lot of money, which could be appealing to some teams looking to build foundation.

Also look into the secondary. Quandre Diggs and Jamal Adams are facing down some big contract years and might demand to get more from a team they both thought would be a contender. To make this easy, you should just assume no player is safe from being dealt for assets. Wilson and Wagner’s move out of town indicate that’s how Pete Carroll and John Schneider are thinking about the situation.

Another factor to consider in all of this is head coach Pete Carroll. He turns 71 this next season. Will his age catch up to drive to put together a champion? Only time and assets will tell.
