What exactly are the Seahawks doing…?

It's not clear how Seattle is planning to build a new team after the Wilson trade

It’s been about a week now since the Seattle Seahawks sent shockwaves through the NFL landscape, and traded franchise quarterback Russell Wilson to the Broncos. Super Bowl winning QB’s don’t normally get traded with prime years remaining. But it seemed like the relationship between ownership and Russ’ camp spoiled to the point that this was irreconcilable. Monday should have brought more clarity to the situation. It did not.

Drew Lock is still technically the starting quarterback for the Seahawks. That can’t be the story of this team.

Bobby Wagner was moved for cap purposes, while the Wilson trade provides assets and additional cap room in order to improve areas of need. But the quarterback market gets thinner as each day passes. Krik Cousins signed an extension with the Vikings. Mitchell Trubisky is going to the Steelers. Marcus Mariotta would be a hometown option, but his effectiveness on field compares favorably to Drew Lock.

The only other plausible solution as to why they’ve been quiet on the signing front is that prospect of drafting a quarterback with the No. 9 overall pick in the NFL Draft. It’s more than conceivable that Malik Willis could fall that far, as teams in front of Seattle are all pretty covered at QB.

Of course there’s always the option to trade for Deshaun Watson, but there’s no telling if he’ll be receptive to playing for another rebuilding team. Time will only tell if the Seahawks choose their path heading into this next season of football.
