Dirt and Sprague were live in Los Angeles for a Pac-12 Media Day that was full of excitement and suspense, as the college football landscape continues to evolve rapidly. Now that Texas and Oklahoma are certain to leave the Big 12 for the SEC, Pac-12 teams are left wondering what’s next for a transitioning league. Two coaches who are confident in their positions are Jonathan Smith and Mario Cristobal.

The guys got the chance to speak with both leaders about expectations for this next season.

Duck fans are eager to see who will be starting QB come September. Cristobal managed to keep that info close to his vest. “Like every other position, we’re going to make guys compete and earn it. The team respects that,” he said. “Whatever you watch on film speaks more loudly than what you say in a meeting… We’re excited they performed at a high level, but they’ve got to do even better.”

Coach also commented on the recent NIL (Name, Image and Likeness) rules implemented this season. “I feel like we have a focused group that understands it’s a tremendous benefit, but it’s not the main thing,” Cristobal stated. “Hopefully we can maintain that balance. It’s our job to help the maximize the opportunity but not tarnish their brand.”

Oregon State Head Football Coach, Jonathan Smith was more focused on the immediate goals for his growing program. Does he expect a bowl berth this season? “I think that’s really the minimum we talk about around our program,” Smith explained. “Each week in this league, you have to play well to win. So why set your expectations to win only six games?”

“We’re expecting this group to continue to make steps and improve from start to finish at the end of this year.”
