Tyler Shough joins a group of Oregon Duck football players how have entered the transfer portal this 2021 off season in hopes of finding better opportunities outside Eugene. That group includes running back Cyrus Habibi-Likio and redshirt freshman quarterback Cale Millen. What sets Shough apart from them is his proven track record of production and clout at the position. Unfortunately, Shough’s situation at the quarterback position became untenable with the rise of Anthony Brown near the end of last season, and 4-Star Arizona prospect Ty Thompson entering the mix this fall.

Shough was considered one of the more efficient passers in the country, but was being benched late in the season. It’s moments like this where we ask; Have Oregon roster spots reached a competitive peak?

Many fans will complain and point to Shough’s move as a surrender. “He couldn’t handle the competition,” is a commonly used trope to describe decisions like this. What many fans don’t realize is that playing time isn’t completely in the player’s hands. Tyler decided better opportunities would be more available on another team. Shough is a quality quarterback, but not the quality QB Oregon is looking for right now.

Mario Cristobal has hit homers each year in recruiting, bringing in a bevy of four star players who are ready to compete at the highest level. At some point, a team can get crowded at certain position and starve out competition for quarterbacks (It’s a pretty singular position). Many SEC teams have encountered this good problem and are forced to turn talent away.

Shough’s transfer may signal a new national identity for the Ducks. One that attracts a wide array of talent, but accepts the exceptional few.
