We had this discussion when the College Football Playoff was released at the beginning of December, and the ensuing results prove to me that the idea that we need to expand beyond four teams is not only a waste of time, but completely unnecessary.
There were a pair of blowouts in the Final Four (Sorry, Sooners. That final score was not indicative of that beatdown).
The No. 5 ranked Georgia Bulldogs team lost to No. 15 Texas, and even if you believe like me that that game meant way more to the Longhorns than UGA, they still lost.
No. 7 Michigan got ripped apart by No. 10 Florida, and No. 8 UCF got beat by a decent but nothing special LSU squad which got shutout by Alabama.
No. 6 Ohio St was the only winner amongst the Top-8 that wasn't Alabama or Clemson.
So, why would I want to see #1 Alabama play No. 8 UCF, and No. 2 Clemson play No.7 Michigan? I wouldn't. I don't need to see any more bad games.
What the bowl season proves is that the committee needs to spend less time worrying about which conference teams are in, and more time worrying about who the best four teams are.
Notre Dame didn't belong, and Georgia's showing vs Alabama in the SEC Championship Game, compared to Oklahoma's, proved that they at least are a better matchup for the Tide.
Keep it at four. Unless bad games are your thing. In which case, the NBA Playoffs start in four months.
