The new law, also known as "The Heartbeat Bill", bans abortions once a heartbeat is detected. That usually occurs around six weeks into the pregnancy. It also allows private citizens to sue anyone who performs an abortion, or assists someone in obtaining an abortion after the fetus' heartbeat is detected.

Our partners at NBC 5 tell us that the petition already has more than 54,000 signatures, most of which are from other states.
