Cowboys' Jerry Jones gives update on Prescott's hamstring; talks faith in Rush, potential Lance packages

The Dallas Cowboys are still weighing their options when it comes to how to proceed with Dak Prescott's injured hamstring, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones told the K&C Masterpiece during their weekly Friday morning visit.

"It's a blurred area. There's no question the injury is there and the question is, 'Will it require surgery?' But that's all opinions," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan. "Of course, the ambiguity here is, first of all, it's going to take him one way or the other. He's got to have some weeks off of it before he can see if it really does require surgery. He doesn't want surgery. He wants to be on the field and go for it. He's weighing that and we're weighing that. And we'll just see how it goes here."

As for how long it could take before they determine which route they take, Jones wasn't so sure but he knows time is of the essence.

"It could (take a couple of weeks to decide). The faster we make this decision the quicker we get the clock running (if we placed him on injured reserve)," Jones said. "The facts are, we don't have to IR him at all. But that keeps us from bringing a player up to the active roster. But I'll weigh whether or not it's worth not having that player on the roster while we let this play out."

Multiple insiders reported this week that Prescott may require season-ending surgery after an MRI determined that he suffered a partial avulsion of his right hamstring tendon.

Jones said Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan that the team will 'likely' place Prescott on injured reserve. However, Dallas has been reluctant to do so while Prescott seeks other opinions because the quarterback would miss the next four games if he lands on IR.

Backup quarterback Cooper Rush will start while Prescott is sidelined, beginning with Sunday's home matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. Jones said Friday that Rush offers "some very unique skills' and "really has some qualities that can get the job done for us.

"I think we can run anything that Dak runs with him (as the starter)," Jones said.

Despite the teams confidence in Rush, it sure sounds like we could see third-string quarterback Trey Lance make his mark at some point during the games Prescott misses.

"There is a window for Trey Lance. There are packages we can work on. Let me be clear, that's just not to get Lance some playing time, that's to bring to the table some offense for us. ... He's a real threat with his legs. I see that. I saw him inconsistent in preseason, but I saw him do some good things in the passing game as well. ... I see situations where he could add to the mix."
