The Cowboys' first casualties this morning were quarterbacks Ben DiNucci and Garrett Gilbert, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed during his regular Tuesday morning appearance on Shan and RJ.

The moves leave Cooper Rush in the driver seat to be Dak Prescott's backup when the Cowboys face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the season opener on Sept. 9.

"I think his consistency. I think we had him going on now three years. This would be the third season. I just think that he's shown he can run the complete offense, and credit to him," Jones said. "He had some tough competition. Those guys didn't cut him any slack. He's had a lot of reps. Our quarterbacks have because of the absence of Dak [Prescott]. And those things make us feel real comfortable here."

While Rush has won the battle among the in-house quarterbacks, it doesn't necessarily mean that the Cowboys won't go out and find their backup quarterback on the open market or through trade.

"I think you've got to assume with his [Rush] knowledge of what we're doing offensively. What we're doing with the existing personnel we're going to be opening with. ... And you've got a high bar here when you got the background that Cooper's [Rush] got," Jones said when asked if the organization will be on the lookout for another quarterback. "Obviously, the waiver wire ... those are highly competitive things, and for obvious reasons we won't be commenting on it.

Stay tuned.
