Inside the Cowboys' red zone numbers

A big discussion point for the Cowboys through the first two weeks of the season is the team’s struggles inside the red zone.

Even Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones was talking about it during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan on Wednesday.

“I think the thing we need to zero in on is when we get that ball down in there close, we've got to get touchdowns,” Jones said.

Here are three interesting facts about the Cowboys in the red zone this season.

The Receivers are a Non-Factor

The Cowboys boast one of the best trios of receivers in the NFL, yet CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks, and Michael Gallup have combined for zero receptions in the Red Zone over the first three games of the season.

Their six combined targets are actually fewer than Jake Ferguson’s eight targets. The Cowboys have always used the tight end in Red Zone designs, but Ferguson has not been nearly as efficient as Dalton Schultz, who led all NFC tight ends in red zone touchdown receptions over the last two seasons.

Tony Pollard’s Workload

Tony Pollard carried the ball just 23 times in the Red Zone in 2022, splitting time with Ezekiel Elliott, who the Cowboys will play this Sunday against the Patriots.

Pollard has already surpassed his 2022 carries in the Red Zone, carrying the ball a staggering 24 times in three weeks.

Goal-To-No

The Cowboys are in the midst of a historic drought in goal-to-go situations. Dallas has failed to score a touchdown in five straight goal-to-go situations, which is the longest drought of Dak Prescott’s career.
