DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Earl Thomas dream lives on thanks to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' latest comments.
Jones was asked if the Cowboys were pursuing Thomas during his appearance on The Rich Eisen Show Tuesday.
“You know I have a lot of personal respect for the player and the career of Earl Thomas. We were able to bring in this past week a guy named Brandon Carr that is quite a veteran, and an accomplished veteran, that can give us a lot of position flex. He can play a safety or a corner and that’s in our pistol for opening week.”
“But having players, building rosters, is a never-ending process. And with Earl sitting out there, that certainly offers us, as long as he’s sitting out there, an opportunity to take a look at how it comes down for us this week and go from there. Now we have a couple of people back there that we’re really excited about, frankly. Xavier Woods and Darren (Darian) Thompson, we’re pretty proud of those guys, and I really think that they’ll give us good stead out there. And we’ve got some position flex with Daryl Worley, who’s a cornerback that plays, can play some safety.
“So it’s not that we’re not pretty sound in our minds at that safety position where a player like Earl Thomas could, but won’t be back there for opening day.”
That answer from Jones prompted 105.3 The Fan's Shan Shariff to have a whole new perspective on Thomas and the Cowboys.
"It's 9:07 central standard time, if you're listening on Radio.com outside of DFW. I have just changed my Earl Thomas opinion because of the last 20 seconds of that clip. Earl Thomas will be on this football team sometime after week 1," Shariff said.
"If you want Earl Thomas on the Cowboys, here's what you want to happen Sunday night on 105.3 The Fan. ... You want the Cowboys to win 40-37. You want an amazing Mike McCarthy/Dak Prescott offense ... but you want this secondary to get torched by Jared Goff. You want to win the game, but you want to win a high-scoring a shootout. If you want Earl Thomas, then the Cowboys will go and get him when the money isn't guaranteed. They're not going to mess up their money situation by signing him right now.
"Jerry almost didn't remember (Xavier) Woods' name (to go with Darian Thompson's name. And when you don't remember the names of the players, I don't think you feel good about the group."
