Report: Damien Wilson to join Cowboys practice squad

The Dallas Cowboys are shoring up their depth before a potentially long playoff run.

Dallas reportedly agreed to a deal with La'el Collins to add him to the practice squad on Tuesday before Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy threw cold water on the report by saying at his Wednesday press conference that the deal wasn't done yet.

“La'el [Collins] looks great. But we’re still working through some things. ... We can revisit it tomorrow," McCarthy said.

David Moore of the Dallas Morning News reported Wednesday afternoon that Collins and linebacker Damien Wilson, who also was brought in for a workout on Tuesday, will likely be added to the team's practice squad on Thursday.

"Anticipation is OT La’el Collins & LB Damien Wilson will be added to the practice squad Thursday, a person with knowledge of the Cowboys thinking said," Moore reported on X.

Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News later added that Wilson would indeed join Dallas' practice squad on Wednesday.

Wilson, who was with Dallas from 2015-18, started 22 of the 64 games he appeared in. He signed a free-agent deal with Kansas City in 2019 and spent two seasons there before playing for Jacksonville in 2021 and Carolina in 2022. The Panthers released Wilson after the season, and he's been a free agent since.

Prior to signing with Carolina, Wilson was arrested in Frisco, Texas, on a charge of assault with bodily injury to a family member. The NFL suspended him for four games under the personal conduct policy.

In a statement given to the Dallas Morning News at the time of the incident, Wilson’s attorney, Toby Shook, disputed the assault allegations.

“Damien Wilson did not commit any type of assault,” Shook said. “We look forward to all the facts coming out so his name can be cleared.”
