Report: Contract length holding up negotiations between Cowboys and Dak Prescott

We are less than a week away from the start of the NFL regular season, and the Dallas Cowboys are still trying to find a resolution to their contract situation with quarterback Dak Prescott.

On Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that "the two sides have been working" and "there have been active conversations" between Dallas and Prescott's agent, Todd France, for the last month. But the "clock is ticking."

“If Prescott does do a deal... which of course would make him the highest-paid quarterback, player, everything in NFL history... then he will remain with the Cowboys this season and beyond.

If he does not do a deal then the likelihood is he will be a free agent, the highest-profile free agent we have ever seen. He has all of the leverage you could possibly get and the clock is ticking.”

When asked on Thursday about what it will mean if he doesn't sign a new deal by the season opener, Prescott said, "I think it says a lot if it is nor if it isn't."

So, what's the hold up in negotiations? Guaranteed money? Length of the contract? According to The Athletic's Dianna Russini, it's the latter.

“The hold up at this point from what I understand is about the years the Dallas Cowboys are willing to commit to," Russini said on the "Scoop City" podcast. "While, it’s assumed, that Dak is going to be paid at the top of the market, the Dallas Cowboys are aware of that. It’s... do they want to put themselves in a position, contractually, that will keep Dak in Dallas longer than two, three, four years. And that’s what Dak is looking for. He’s looking for a long-term commitment from Dallas. So the hold up here is really the belief from the Dallas Cowboys. This is a guy who’s won a lot of games. But is that enough? Winning’s not enough for Jerry Jones. We know this. They want to do more... they don’t want to just be the team that wins a lot of games. They want to be the team that can play in the Super Bowl."

Why might the Cowboys be reluctant to commit more years to Prescott? Shan and RJ reacted to Russini's report on Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan. Plus, they predicted whether or not Prescott would get a deal done this week.
