Chase Young is the overwhelming betting favorite to go second overall to the Redskins in the first round of the upcoming NFL Draft.
If the chance for a curveball selection exists, it would likely be because Ron Rivera isn't sold on Dwayne Haskins "at all," The Sports Junkies theorized Monday morning.
"Do you think they do anything different than the obvious, simplest thing to do, which is draft Chase Young," John-Paul Flaim asked.
"I'd put my money on Chase Young," Jason Bishop said. "I think too many other things have to happen for them to trade out of it."
In the past week, draft stock for quarterbacks projected to go in the first round have fluctuated all over the place. While Oregon's Justin Herbert and Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa are widely considered the second- and third-best passers behind LSU's Joe Burrow, the two have taken turns flip-flopping in their respective rankings.
Because so many believe the Redskins will take Young, few see Washington as a viable trade partner for teams looking to move up for a passer.
"Again, we've talked about this a billion times. It depends on how much they like Haskins," Bishop continued. "If they're not sold on him at all, then yeah, Tua's in play. Or maybe Herbert's in play, I don't know. But if I had to put money on it, it's Chase Young."
"Yeah I would agree with that," said John Auville. "And, when you're picking, especially this high, you're not only trying to get the best player, you're also trying to mitigate risk as much as you can, and Chase Young, it doesn't seem like there's a lot of risk involved with that pick.
"He's a guy that, if you pick him, if he stays healthy, he should be an anchor on your defense for eight to 10 years. If you pick Tua, you're picking a six-foot-tall quarterback, if he's that tall, with a long injury history heading into the NFL. I just think there's less risk with Chase Young."
"And a low Wonderlic, by the way," Flaim said, noting Tagovailoa's below-average score on the cognitive test. "That came out over the weekend."
"Yeah, but that was a little bit misleading," Auville said, "because that was the score he had the first time he took the Wonderlic. I think he scored six or seven points higher the second time he took it. Look, you know what? Lamar Jackson scored a 13 on the Wonderlic, okay?"
"Yeah, don't put stock in that," Bishop said. "Like Richard Sherman says, those guys don't even care about that."
"I mean Dan Marino I thinks scored a 16 on the Wonderlic. Would you let him quarterback your team? I'm pretty sure that you would."
The Junkies went on to make over/under predictions on the Redskins' season win total of 5.5 for 2020.
