PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) Ben Cherington, the new General manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates joined Dan Zangrilli on 93.7 the Fan this morning to discuss the team and what the near future holds for the team and the league.
Not only is the money lost from Coronavirus a huge factor, but there is also currently no deal with the MLB for the minor league system to continue as is.
Cherington offered his thoughts on the possible changes.
Wanting the best possible training and environment for the players should be the top priority.
“Creating the best possible training and improvement environment for professional baseball players,” Cherington said. “And for the Pirates that is a critical element for building a winning team.”
Cherington would go on to include professional competition as a main proponent for improving players.
On top of growing the skill of a player, Cherington mentioned how much a minor league baseball team can mean to a community.
“Minor league baseball… gives us all a chance to connect more deeply in different communities and give people a chance to fall in love with the game of baseball.”
Cherington thinks that minor league baseball will continue to exist and thrive, and trusts that there are “smart folks” working on a new agreement to keep it around.
