PITTSBURGH (93.7 The FAN) - Pirates starter Joe Musgrove was in the running to start one fo the two openers for the team in 2020, but like the rest of the league, is at home waiting to hear word on whether or not the 2020 season will even be played.
Musgrove joined The PM Team to talk about how he's passing the time, what he's doing to stay in shape and if/when he thinks the 2020 season could get underway.
When the recent ESPN report about quarantining the entire league in Arizona and playing games at spring training facilities was brought up, Musgrove said he was initially excited just to hear an idea about getting back on the field.
"I liked the idea," Musgrove said. "The sooner we can get back, the better it is for everybody."
There is one part of the idea in particular that doesn't bother Joe much, but could impact other teammates.
"It's a lot easier for me to say 'Ya, let's get it rolling,' than guys that have families and have children and are gonna be expected to stay away from them for four to five months. I'm sure theres plenty of guys in the league right now that are pregnant and have babies on the way."
Joe describes himself as "optimistic" that they'll play at least part of the 2020 season adding that "I think they're gonna do everything they can, whether it's playing in front of no fans for a little while, playing in Arizona, whatever the situation is...I know it's not at the top of the priority list right now, there's a lot more important things to worry about than baseball, but we can provide a lot of job for people that are stuck in their homes and not able to get out, you know, we can get baseball back on TV, some live action, and get some people back to work."
