Wow.

According to multiple reports, the Patriots have released quarterback Cam Newton, which means rookie Mac Jones will be the starting QB Week 1 against Miami.

Newton had a disappointing 2020 season, but a lot of his issues could be attributed to not having an offseason, COVID issues, etc. After re-signing this offseason, the veteran had a solid summer and started all three preseason games.

Bill Belichick had said from the night Jones was drafted Newton was the starter, but did say that could change once someone played better than. Apparently he feels Jones now has.

The rookie saw extensive playing time this preseason, but little with the starters.

The quarterbacks room has Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham (PUP) in addition to Jones.
