The No. 1 high school quarterback recruit just made an unprecedented move.
Quinn Ewers has decided to skip his senior season at Southlake Carroll High School in Texas and enroll at Ohio State, according to Pete Thamel of Yahoo! Sports.
The new Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) rules factored into Ewer’s decision as he could make up to nearly seven-figures by profiting off of his NIL.
As a high school athlete in Texas, Ewers would not have been able to do that until he completed his athletic competitions.
The five-star recruit will be able to join Ohio State’s football program this month, but it is uncertain when he will begin to participate in practice.
Ewers, 18, will be one of four scholarship quarterbacks on the Buckeyes’ roster, none of which have thrown a pass at the collegiate level. C.J. Stroud, Jack Miller and Kyle McCord are the other vying for the starting job and would likely have an advantage of Ewers, who still must learn the playbook.
The decision by Ewers to skip his senior season and attend college could potentially set a trend for elite athletes in the future to leave a year early in order to make money off their NIL.
