DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Texas Rangers have officially signed 2022 fourth-round pick Brock Porter to a contract, the club announced on Wednesday.
Porter will earn $3.7 million, well over the $560,000 slot evaluation assigned to the 109th pick of the draft, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.
The Rangers used the funds they saved on first-round pick Kumar Rocker's contract to sign Porter to an over-slot contract, keeping him from his commitment to Clemson. Rocker received a $5.2 million bonus, well below the $7.5 million slot value for the No. 3 overall pick.
“Brock Porter was arguably the top high school pitcher in the nation this spring, and we are delighted to have him join the Rangers’ organization,” said Executive Vice President and General Manager Chris Young. “He has great makeup and outstanding stuff, and it’s exciting to project his future growth and development. We have added two elite pitching prospects in Brock and Kumar Rocker at the top of our 2022 draft.”
Porter was named Gatorade National Player of the Year after going 9-0 with a 0.41 ERA, and 115 strikeouts in 58 innings, according to Max Preps. St. Mary's won three state championships during Porter's time with the program (2019, 2021 and 2022).
Porter, 6-4, 208 pounds, was rated as a top-15 prospect in the 2022 class by multiple outlets, including MLB Pipeline (11), Baseball America (12), and FanGraphs (14).
