Texas sportswriter Dave Campbell has died at the age of 96.

The man who founded the publication known as the "Bible of Texas football" has died. Dave Campbell passed away at his home in Waco. He was 96 years old.


The first issue of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine was published in 1960. It helped shape decades of sports coverage throughout the state and beyond.

Campbell was born in Waco in 1925. He left town to serve in the U.S. Army during World War Two but returned home after the war. He graduated from Baylor University and worked for decades at the Waco Tribune-Herald as their sports editor. Campbell is also a member of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.

Texas sportswriters and broadcasters have been offering their tributes to Campbell on social media.

Doug Anderson, who broadcasts high school football games in North Texas on TV, called him a "legend beyond compare".

Long-time Houston Chronicle sportswriter John McClain described him as an "inspiration and role model".

Campbell's wife Reba passed away in 2020 at the age of 95. He is survived by two daughters and several grandchildren.
