Sir, this is a Wendy’s.
Thursday is apparently National Roast Day, an occasion Wendy’s celebrated by offering to roast anyone brave enough to reply to the restaurant on social media. Eager to get the Jeff Ross treatment, MLB’s Tampa Bay Rays quickly threw their hat in the virtual ring, leading to this highly entertaining dialogue:
I’ll be honest, when I woke up today, I did not anticipate writing about an iconic fast-food chain savagely dragging the reigning American League champions on Twitter. But here we are.
Who knew the burger joint that gave us the beloved chocolate Frosty could deliver such biting criticism? Not that the Rays don’t deserve it. Manager Kevin Cash arguably cost Tampa Bay the World Series last fall with his decision to pull former Cy Young winner Blake Snell just 73 pitches into his Game 6 masterpiece. Cash paid a steep price for his meddling—reliever Nick Anderson collapsed in Snell’s stead, allowing the Dodgers to clinch their first title in 32 years.
Snell, now a member of the San Diego Padres, seemed to enjoy the exchange between his former club and the genius minds that invented the Baconator, chiming in with a few well-placed emojis.
The World Series is obviously still a sore subject for Rays fans, and probably always will be. But even accounting for that disappointment, it’s still been a phenomenal few months for Tampa-based sports teams. The Lightning took home its second Stanley Cup this fall while the Buccaneers were crowned NFL champions Sunday following their victory over the Chiefs in Super Bowl LV. If the Rays ever do manage to win a World Series, hopefully their victory parade will be as raucous and boozy as the one the hard-partying Bucs just enjoyed.
