In January, the space shuttle Challenger exploded, instantly killing 7 astronauts, and emotionally scarring a decade of children who watched on TV. In April in the Soviet Union, the nuclear power station Chernobyl blew up, causing death and devastation that continues to this day.
On TV, The Cosby Show and Cagney and Lacey were popular, and the movies Top Gun and Platoon were big at the box office.
