40 years ago today, a new way of experiencing music was born. With the video for "VIdeo Killed The Radio Star" by Buggles, MTV Music Television was blasted onto our tv's. I was going to college in Stevens Point, and the cable system there picked up the channel sometime during that first month.
I remember they didn't have a lot of videos at that time so they repeated a LOT. I certainly didn't mind that they had quite a few REO Speedwagon videos and played them over and over and over.
Did you have a favorite MTV VJ? Can you still remember the lineup? I think my favorite was Martha Quinn, but I really had no problems with the others Alan Hunter, Nina Blackwood, Alan Hunter, and JJ Jackson.
The video era of MTV was really very short, but there are certain songs from the 1980s that immediately bring to mind their video. Of course, everyone remembers that "Take On Me" video by a-ha, the cool videos Peter Gabriel made, and that Phil Collins video where all you see is his giant face singing "In The Air Tonight."
I haven't watched MTV in decades, but I'm proud to be old enough to identify with all the memes that say "Remember when MTV played videos?"
