Jelly Roll is reflecting on just how far he’s come after Alternative band, The Black Keys, reminded him of a turbulent interaction they had with one another back in 2010.

Ahead of their headlining set at Audacy’s Riptide Music Festival, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney described a run-in they had with fellow Riptide headliner, Jelly Roll, about 13 years ago when he challenged them to a fight following a misunderstanding.
“What had happened was, I met Jelly Roll 13 years ago, before he was famous and he's just like right out of prison probably, it was 2010,” Carney explained. “I was with this friend of ours, Harmony Korine, we were in Nashville at this Hip Hop show. Yelawolf was just coming out starting to perform and I went and Jelly Roll was there. I didn't know who he was.”
Carney continued, "Harmony was joking around about something. Jelly Roll thought we were making fun of him, and he just rolled up to me and just scared the living crap out of me. Like, ‘Do you wanna go...?’ And I was like, ‘Nope, I'm good dude. Nice to meet you though.’"
Later in the week following their interview with Audacy, Jelly Roll responded to the story sharing he was ashamed to admit it was true and went into further detail of how he’s found peace in his life.
"I'm embarrassed to say it's a true story,” Jelly told The Daily Show. “I was fresh out of jail, and I was battling those -- I still had those habits with me. I was just a very, very insecure human being.”
He continued on to explain his transformation he’s had in the years since as he’s prioritized his purpose, faith, happiness and loving himself.
"It's the 'who I was' and 'who I am' thing again, right? Man, God softened my heart," he expressed. "Looking back at that kid, I kinda laugh. I got blushing when you brought it up 'cause I was embarrassed, a little bit. I was so entitled and so angry, and everything was about me. I thought they were joking and laughing at us 'cause I was used to being in that kind of a situation. It was all about ego, man."
Both have made clear there is no bad blood between them following the incident and everyone involved is able to laugh about it now. “He seems a lot different, he was very angry then” Carney concluded. “He just, he kind of flexed on me and I was like, ‘Oh, you don't realize I'm a wimp.' I mean, I can talk some smack,” he laughed, “but I, I'm not backing it up.”
Jelly wrapped by shouting out the guys saying, “By the way, I love y'all, Black Keys. It's all peaceful. I won't try to fight you again. It's all good. I think the music's incredible. I wish y'all well."
