It’s a deeply personal album that Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds has called the band’s most “vulnerable” yet. The record is filled with emotional tracks that stemmed from difficult family experiences. From “Wrecked,” which is a tribute to his sister-in-law Alisha, who died of cancer in 2019, to “Follow You,” a love letter he wrote to his wife, there's no shortage of personal material.

Still, those are just two stories amidst 13 total songs that are on the album.

In a new interview with USA Today, Reynolds shared the story several songs on the record revealing emotional family moments as well as messages he wants to send to his kids.

On the song “Monday,” Reynolds says it’s a “love letter to my partner and wife of 10 years.”

“We’ve been through a lot together and she’s the lifeblood of everything I do. I wanted to create this song we could dance to and that was tongue-in-cheek.”

Then, there’s the track “No Time for Toxic People.” “The theme of the record was facing the finality of life, and it’s scary to think about it,” Reynolds said.

“It’s why we don’t spend every day talking about death because it’s a scary, open-ended conversation. I wanted (this song) to be a celebration of life and knowing that one day, it’s going to be OK.”

The song also serves as a message to Reynolds’ four children. “I want them to know there is always tomorrow to rid yourself of toxic people,” he said.
