Whether Dak Prescott is NFL MVP at season’s end remains to be seen, but it’s hard to dispute that he’s already earned that distinction on his own team this year.
Prescott is putting together arguably the best campaign of his career, and Thursday’s rousing win over the Seahawks was his latest masterpiece. He was 29-of-41 for 299 yards and three touchdowns in the air, while adding 23 yards on seven rushes. Down eight early in the fourth quarter, he helped orchestrate 14 unanswered points down the stretch to earn the 41-35 win.
The on-field play itself was dazzling, but perhaps his finest moment came on the sidelines. After the Cowboys went up 38-35, Micah Parsons said Prescott challenged the defense. It worked, as Dallas defense blanked Seattle’s offense the rest of the way of what otherwise had been a shootout.
Jerry Jones used that anecdote as an opportunity to salute Prescott’s leadership Friday in his weekly appearance on K&C Masterpiece.
“We have never had a better leader," Jones said. "I used to say that Michael Irvin was the best leader that I had been around as a player, and that’s the one with the most stroke, a leader-player. Roger Staubach, I’ll never forget, when I was asking him when we were moving on from (Tony) Romo, I said I’m really looking at drafting a quarterback here over the next period of time to try to hit on one – would I get a move around guy or would I get a traditional dropback pocket passer? He said 'I don’t know about that, Jerry, but the most important thing is get you somebody the team will follow.'
“Well, Dak Prescott is the best pied piper for everybody. I'm not just talking about the team, I’m talking about the coaches (too). He is the pied piper of the team, and he does a great job in this area.”
