Few coordinators are as polarizing as Jonathan Gannon, but it is clear that within the Eagles organization he has plenty of supporters.
Philly’s defensive coordinator has come under fire from a faction of the fanbase for his generally simplistic philosophy. The results are indisputable though, as the Eagles have had one of the best defenses in the league this season wire-to-wire under Gannon.
Sure, that’s also the product of a collection of uber-talented players on the defensive side of the ball. But Gannon catches plenty of heat locally, despite having some national respect since he’s on the head coaching radar.
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni gave an emphatic defenses of Gannon after their win over the Giants – including this week on Angelo Cataldi and the Morning Team. Eagles linebacker Nakobe Dean also gave an endorsement of his DC on CBS Sports Radio’s “The Zach Gelb Show.”
“I feel like he’s confident in what he does," Dean says. "The confidence that he brings, he’s confident that what he calls that the guys on the field are going to execute just because of the way he got us prepared throughout the season, throughout the preseason, throughout everything. He’s just confident in his play calls no matter what.”
Gannon and the Eagles have their tallest task yet awaiting them, as they’ll face Christian McCaffrey and the 49ers this Sunday in the NFC Championship.
