After missing the Capitals' game against the Rangers for personal reasons Monday night, T.J. Oshie announced the passing of his father, "Coach Oshie," on social media Tuesday morning.
"It's with a heavy heart today that my family mourns the passing of my Dad 'Coach Oshie,' the Caps forward wrote. "Coach lived life to the fullest and was unanimously loved by everyone who met him. Thanks to all the family and friends for their support. Heaven received a legend today. #RIPCoachOsh"
Although the cause of death was not disclosed, Tim Oshie had been suffering from Alzheimer's — a degenerative disease that ravages one's memory and other important mental functions — since 2012.
One of the hallmarks of Washington's on-ice celebration, Caps fans surely remember T.J. Oshie's emotional response to his father being able to witness him hoist Lord Stanley's Cup, fortunate they could share the moment together as the Caps defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 5 of the 2018 Stanley Cup Final to become champions.
While celebrating on the ice, Oshie frequently appeared choked up whenever he was asked about his father.
"You're gonna make me cry, really, now? My dad's here in the crowd," Oshie said in an especially gripping post-game interview with Canada's Sportsnet. "He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and he doesn't remember a lot of stuff. But you bet your ass he's gonna remember this one."
