What's the one thing Americans can't live without? Their cellphones!
According to PR Newswire, a new study from Asurion confirms that the phone has overtaken the car as the most important item to the average American.
The online poll surveyed over one thousand U.S. adults and found that there's a collective need to stay connected, especially amid a pandemic.
Asurion President Cindy Christy said, "Across work, grocery shopping, school and staying connected to friends and family, phones are increasingly critical for most of their day-to-day activities. This trend has accelerated during the pandemic."
The emphasis on phones means that people are also more likely to get broken phones repaired and missing phones replaced. The company has seen a 20% jump in customers who are "filing phone claims the same day they had a phone mishap," which is a change from pre-pandemic days that say people waiting almost a month to fix their phones.
Staying in touch and communicating with loved ones, especially when you can't see them on a daily basis, has never been more important. And phones don't just help you stay connected, they also offer entertainment via apps, games, and streaming services. Research shows that at least half of Americans use phones for entertainment.
"Additionally, three-quarters of Americans' phones have irreplaceable information including photos and/or video (82%), their contact list (60%), password or login credentials (52%), documents and important notes (45%), and music (32%)," the survey found.
Following the phone and the car for most important is... drumroll please... the refrigerator. Where else are you going to store all those leftovers?
