At one point, a biopic about Wu-Tang Clan was incredibly close to becoming a reality. More so, Leonardo DiCaprio was reportedly on board with helping to make the movie.

This news comes from an excerpt from Raekwon’s upcoming memoir From Staircase To Stage: The Story Of Raekwon And Wu-Tang Clan. Rolling Stone shared a snippet on how he recruited DiCaprio and his production company to make a Wu-Tang film, but was ultimately shut down by RZA.

“We started talking about the possibility of a Wu-Tang movie and I told Leo I’d love to see him play a role in it, anything he wanted to do,” Raekwon said of his meeting with DiCaprio. “He talked about his production company and all the directors he thought might do a great job — and these were big names and people he’d worked with.”

Raekwon said that DiCaprio “was super open to the idea” and had the executives of his production company reach out after their meeting. “They were very interested,” he said. “So we got the ball rolling, talking real numbers, with the goal of an even bigger release than Straight Outta Compton.”

Unfortunately, the idea never got any further as RZA was already committed to developing a TV series about the group.

“RZA’s energy was entirely different,” Raekwon recalled of a meeting between DiCaprio’s production company and the Wu-Tang members. “He barely said anything and seemed to be going through the motions, nothing more. I could tell he wasn’t going to agree to do it, and my instincts told me why: my guess is that he was already in bed with a production company, deep into developing the scripted series for TV, even though none of us had signed off on it.”
