The Reel Buzz: 'Spongebob Squarepants' movie gets release date along with new spinoff series at Peacock

“The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run” finally has a premiere date!

ViacomCBS announced that the animated film featuring Spongebob, Patrick, Squidward, and friends will debut in the U.S. on March 4 on the streaming service Peacock.

The adventure comedy was previously slated for a theatrical release on May 22, 2020 before being postponed to August 7, 2020 due to COVID-19.

Eventually, it was announced that the film would be pulled entirely from theaters in favor of a digital release in early 2021 instead.

According to the Twitter announcement, It will also be available to rent for $20 on Apple TV, Prime Video, Vudu and in other digital stores.

But that’s not all that “SpongeBob Squarepants” fans can look forward to.

The revamped streaming service, previously known as CBS All Access, will also debut a prequel series titled “Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years.”

The first six episodes will launch in conjunction with the movie. The remaining 13 episodes will debut “at later dates to be announced,” Deadline reports.

Eventually, the season will be available on Nickelodeon.

The prequel series is the first spinoff in the animated series’ 22-year-run.

“The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run” joins the list of films like “Trolls: World Tour,” “The King of Staten Island” and “Scoob” which have bypassed theatrical runs since the shuttering of cinemas in mid-March in response to the spread of COVID-19.

Paramount has also postponed the release of several highly-anticipated films including “Top Gun: Maverick” and “A Quiet Place 2.”

Paramount+ is set to make its official debut on March 4 in the U.S and Latin America. It will be available in Nordic countries like Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland on March 25. Australia will get access by mid-year.
