Matt Stell called in to chat with RADIO.COM's Coop from Coop's Rockin’ Country Saturday Night to discuss his new EP, Better Than That.
Matt’s first two singles of his newly released effor couldn’t be any more different, with the first, “Prayed for You” being a love song and “Everywhere But On" which all about heartbreak. With Matt credited as co-writer on both tracks, Coop was curious if both were about the same woman, and we’d have to say, we are too.
Matt clued us in on some deets, “Yeah, there’s definitely some overlap there.” Matt went on to detail that the idea behind “Prayed For You,” which he wrote alongside Ash Bowers and Allison Veltz actually originated from Veltz, who met her now husband two days prior to writing the song. Adding, “but then of course we injected our experiences” into the song.

Matt also talked about how much he enjoyed those many roles he played in his music video for “If I Was A Bar.” Stell took on thirteen characters to be exact, with Pernell Hawkins the CDL Driver/HVAC Technician probably being his favorite to act out. “We had making up these back stories,” Matt expressed, “I felt like I knew a lot of these characters, I’d met ‘em, whatever they were I just dialed it up 30%, or maybe 130%.”
Picking his favorite track off the EP however, posed to be a bit harder for Matt, as he co-wrote five out of the eight featured songs. “Man, you know, It’s like picking my favorite food, it just kinda depends on the time of day," Matt said, "I’m really enjoying playing 'Better Than That' right now… it’s a lot of fun to play… kinda that rock n roll thing that kinda has a little bit of heartbreak to it. It’s just like my favorite kind of Country music.”
Coop and Matt went on to discuss what goes behind the decision to include a non self-written on a project, in addition to where Matt thinks he’d be today if Country music stardom wasn’t the route he ended up on. For all that and so much more listen to the full interview with Matt Stell above.
