According to PEOPLE, Isbell filed for divorce from Shires last December, just before what would have been the Country couple’s 11th wedding anniversary.

The pair has always been candid through their craft of the ups and downs of their relationship. In 2020, Isbell’s album, Reunions, exposed cracks in their relationship, while a 2023 documentary, Running With Our Eyes Closed, exposed the couples attempts to mediate their marriage.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re a quasi-famous person like Jason or me, everybody’s relationships are the same; there’s up and downs and there’s good and bad and you just try to deal with it,” Shires expressed in a 2022 interview. “Life’s not easy, marriage isn’t easy, but aren’t we lucky to be able to live?”

Isbell opened up about his side of struggles in a 2020 interview with The New York Times admitting he pushed Shires away when career pressure closed in while working on his album, Reunions.

“At one point, I said, ‘It’d be easier if somebody had cheated.’ Then we could say, ‘You did this,’ or ‘I did this,' and ‘Somebody needs to be real sorry,’” Isbell shared. “But it was more like, ‘We don’t know each other right now. We’re not able to speak the same language.’”

No word on what the split means for their involvement in one another’s professional lives as Shires is part of Isbell’s band, The 400 Unit and Isbell is part of Shires’ supergroup, The Highwomen. The couple also share 8-year-old daughter, Mercy.
