When Salma Hayek visited Taco Bell for the first time, she was puzzled.
In an interview with Kelly Clarkson, Hayek shared the first moment she tried Taco Bell for the first time during her teenage years. The 54-year-old "Eternals" star recounted her surprise at learning that tacos from the United States are much different from Mexico, where she was born and spent her childhood.
The actress explained how she spent her childhood in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico, but as a teenager moved to Houston, Texas, to live with her aunt.
During that time, she wanted to live the American life and learn about the culture, which is when she decided to visit Taco Bell. However, when she received her meal, she was confused.
“They gave us the (hard) shell tacos. I’ve never seen that in my life; they don’t exist in Mexico. It’s always with the soft tortilla,” she explained.
She then tried to tell employees at the Taco Bell that she wanted tacos, the soft-tortilla tacos.
“We’re asking each other, ‘How do you say tacos in English?’ I don’t know, the name of the place is Taco Bell,” she told Clarkson.
"I'm like, 'OK, taco, taco, taquito. You roll it. Yum, yum, yum. This is hard, it’s not like this,’” she said while showing how she would hold and eat a taco.
Hayek learned that the taco chain offers both hard and soft tacos.
“Turns out, that’s a Texan taco, like Tex-Mex,” she said.
