Over the weekend, Andy Gill, the guitarist for the English post-punk band Gang of Four passed away after a short respitory illness. He was 64.
Gang of Four released their debut album in 1979 on the heels of UK punk and continued making records throughout the 80s. I admit, Gang of Four might not be a household name in 2020 but the band's influence is undeniable. They had a bit of a resurgance in the mid 2000s when bands like Bloc Party and Franz Ferdinand started using aggressive beats and angular guitars, key ingredients in the Gang of Four sound.
Andy Gill was also a respected record producer working with the Red Hot Chili Peppers on their self-titled album in 1984.
