Locals Only Artist of the Month: Cumulus

As we slide into September and start to say goodbye to summer it is time to announce our new Locals Only Artist of the Month.

Meet Cumulus.

Alex has been one of my favorite songwriters in the area for a lot of years now. From collaborating with Odesza to releasing perfect singles like "Retreat" and perfect albums like 2018s Comfort World (oh and a gorgeous cover of "Closing Time") I've never been able to get enough of Cumulus.

So when Cumulus released the album Something Brighter last fall I was heartbroken that Locals Only wasn't currently on the air for me to blast these fantastic new songs. Now that the show is back it was an easy choice to make Cumulus or Locals Only Artist of the Month for September.

You'll be hearing "Risky Business Feeling" by Cumulus featuring Little Wins all month long on The End.

Something Brighter, the third album by Alexandra Lockhart under the Cumulus name, appears a world away from the creative burnout she felt at the end of the previous album campaign and supporting tour in 2019. As she found herself questioning what might come next, rather than pursue stage lights at the expense of a personal life, Alexandra craved stability and balance. Not an uncommon desire for seasoned musical artists at the end of an album campaign. Falling in love, and moving from Seattle back to her college town of Bellingham, WA made even the most basic life details nostalgic. All of a sudden she was again surrounded by the scenery that inspired her to become a songwriter over a decade ago. There was something ripe for reflection in moving back to the town where her creative life began, in an effort to build something completely new. It would be the dawn of Something Brighter.

Gratitude and the bittersweetness of learning from the past are in the undercurrent of every song on Something Brighter, which was released in October of 2022. What a beautiful thing to make mistakes and learn from them; to heal wounds, to love deeply, and to dance in your underwear. Despite being written and recorded during some of the scariest and darkest of times, these songs unequivocally reach for the light.

The release of Something Brighter marks the initial offering from Cumulus on Share It Music, a record label and 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
