Following the shooting in Uvalde, Texas, politicians have been quick to call for gun legislation, proposing ideas like banning automatic assault-style weapons. But will they be able to pass this type of legislation?
Rich Zeoli, host of the Rich Zeoli Show on 1210 WPHT Talk Radio, shared that despite the new call for this type of legislation, Democrats don't have the support to get it done.
Zeoli said that behind the call to ban assault-style guns is the ability to make it a "campaign issue" going into the 2024 election because "they know it's not going to pass."
"They don't have the votes to ban AR-15s or any of those styles of weapons. They know that," Zeoli said. "But they love making things about potential votes."
What Zeoli thinks will be pressed and voted on is the Machin-Toomey bill which would require universal background checks for purchasing firearms.
But he says that they don't really want to vote on any of these bills. Instead, he thinks they only want to use it as political fuel to help their campaigns for this fall and sway Senator Joe Manchin to agree to get rid of the filibuster.
"They are going to say to Manchin, 'Hey, look, man, you got this opportunity to get your vote through. Get your big bill passed… but you got to get rid of the filibuster, so you got to join our side,'" Zeoli said. "They are going to put that pressure on him. I don't think Manchin is going to fold, but that's what they are trying to use that leverage for."
