In the early hours of Sunday, a shooting broke out at a Baltimore block party, injuring dozens and killing at least two people, police shared.

The Baltimore Police Department was notified about the shooting at around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, with reports that multiple people were injured. Police have since confirmed that 28 people were injured in the mass shooting, and two adults were fatally wounded.

“Our hearts and prayers are going out to the families, sending out to the families and friends of these victims as well as the community in our entire city,” Acting Police Commissioner Richard Worley said in a press conference.

After the shooting, 19 people were taken to MedStar Health Central for treatment. Debra Schindler, a spokesperson for the hospital, shared that the victims were “suffering varying degrees of injury from gunshot wounds.”

“Multiple critically injured patients were evaluated and triaged simultaneously by clinical staff, while hospital security managed the throng of family members that gathered in and outside of the emergency department,” the statement added.

According to the statement, at least nine patients were taken to other Baltimore trauma centers, and all but one has been released.

Other victims were taken to other area hospitals for treatment, including the University of Maryland Medical Center, which shared it had four victims in its pediatric emergency department.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott spoke at a press conference following the shooting, calling the shooting “reckless” and “cowardly.”

“I want those who are responsible to hear me, hear me very clearly, we will not stop until we find you, and we will find you,” Scott said.

A cause for the shooting has not yet been shared, but police are still investigating to understand what happened before bullets started flying.
