The Minnesota Department of Corrections shared on Sunday that an estimated 100 inmates have taken over a portion of a prison facility in Stillwater.
The Minnesota Correctional Facility-Stillwater has been placed on emergency lockdown status by the DOC, according to a release.
The takeover reportedly started after inmates refused to return to their cells, with no indication of why.
The DOC shared that staff have been removed from the common areas of the housing unit, and two correctional officers are in a safe and secure control area.
DOC Spokesman Andy Skoogman confirmed that the agency has activated members of its Crisis Negotiation Team and is deploying the Special Operations Response Team out of an abundance of caution.
It is still unclear why the inmates are refusing to return to their cells.
No injuries have been reported, and the situation remains ongoing.
