The Biden administration shared on Wednesday that more than 160,000 borrowers who work in public service will see their student debt canceled.

The new plan will forgive $7.7 billion for the latest batch of borrowers, bringing the total relief from Biden’s student actions to $167 billion for 4.75 million Americans.

To qualify for this latest round of student debt forgiveness, borrowers must be enrolled in the SAVE Plan and work in public service. These jobs include teachers, nurses, and law enforcement officials.

Others who qualify are borrowers approved for relief because of fixes to income-driven repayment plans.

“The Biden-Harris Administration remains persistent about our efforts to bring student debt relief to millions more across the country, and this announcement proves it,” Education Sec. Miguel Cardona said in a statement. “One out of every 10 federal student loan borrowers approved for debt relief means one out of every 10 borrowers now has financial breathing room and a burden lifted.”

While Biden’s wide-reaching student debt forgiveness was shot down by the Supreme Court last year, he has continued to find different ways to offer relief for borrowers.

This comes as Biden continues to try and fulfill his 2020 campaign promise ahead of the 2024 election.

Last month, more than 277,000 public service workers, those on IDR plans, those with disabilities, and those defrauded by their schools were given relief by the Biden administration.

Biden has announced other plans to give relief to more than 25 million borrowers, but they are likely to be challenged in court.
