The worst cities to drive in revealed

We all hate getting stuck in traffic, but drivers in some cities have it worse than others -- way, way worse.

That's the finding from a new report from Forbes Advisor, which looked at factors such as safety, the cost of car ownership and overall driving experience to determine the worst cities to drive in across the nation.

The report found that on average, Chicago drivers spend more time in traffic than in any of the other 47 largest cities in the country. With rush hour speeds averaging only 18 mph, local drivers lose a total of 155 hours per year sitting in traffic.

The report cited those rush hour speeds and hours in traffic as one of the key reasons that Chicago drivers spend more money on gas than those in any other city, averaging over $2,600 annually.

Even so, Chicago does not take the top spot on the list -- that goes to Oakland, California. Forbes Advisor says people here "have the worst driving experience" out of all 47 cities evaluated due to the high number of fatal car accidents, steep gas prices and a high average commute time workers face each day.

Rounding out the top five is Miami, San Francisco, Houston and Philadelphia.
