With the news that her boss is stepping out of the race, Vice President Kamala Harris has announced that she will seek the Democratic nomination, hoping to replace President Joe Biden.
Harris shared the news in a statement on Sunday after President Biden announced he was dropping out. The president also backed Harris after dropping out, calling on the party to rally around her.
“Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year,” Biden wrote on social media.
In a statement announcing her own intent, Harris praised Biden for the support and shared her intentions.
“I am honored to have the president’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination,” Harris said. “Over the past year, I have traveled across the country, talking with Americans about the clear choice in this momentous election. And that is what I will continue to do in the days and weeks ahead.”
Harris now has a major advantage ahead of the planned vote at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next month.
