Talk about a shock, workers in Tennessee reportedly found a human heart in a Department of Transportation salt pile while they were going to make brine last week. The discovery has led to a law enforcement investigation to discover where it came from, officials shared over the weekend.
The discovery was made at a state Department of Transportation salt facility in McEwen on Thursday of last week, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
“An initial examination of the heart determined that it was that of an adult male,” an agency statement said. “Additional DNA testing will be performed to try to determine its origin. This remains an active and ongoing investigation.”
The bureau will now investigate the situation after 23rd Judicial District Attorney General Ray Crouch requested one be conducted.
The Humphreys County Sheriff’s Office will assist the state investigators, and the county Sheriff Chris Davis spoke with WSMV about the findings.
“I’ve got 32 years in law enforcement,” Davis said. “I do have to say this is probably in the top 5 of most bizarre things that I’ve ever seen.”
Upon its discovery, the heart was dried out, and workers said they thought it was a rock as they retrieved salt from their barn, Davis shared, praising them for contacting the police.
“They did act out of suspicion, and my hat’s off to them. You know, they got to thinking, and when they got that first inclination or doubt in their mind they made the right call,” Davis said. “I’m very appreciative of that, and hopefully, when we can find the rest of the remains, then the family. [Who,] I hope, will be thankful for that as well.”
The investigation is still ongoing, and the state’s Department of Transportation said in a statement on Monday that it would be “fully cooperating with law enforcement.”
“Somebody somewhere knows, and we’re seeking information,” Davis said. “I always reach out to the public if you happen to have any idea or just an inclination.”
